Dear Computer Chess Friends, for those amongst you who like to watch engine matches or computer tournaments on their own computer(s), but want to avoid any opening book "influence", I have prepared the following starting positions. By following the shuffle chess idea, I have set up 18 positions (or 17 to be exact, because one of them is the standard starting position) where the following conditions are met: 1. white-black symmetry 2. kings and rooks on the original squares (to keep all castlings possible) 3. bishops of different square color I have found 18 different positions. If you use it, make sure to switch off any additional book (if necessary), in case the program can recognise no. 10 as the standard position. While this method should avoid any doubt, that some engines might be favoured because of the style or whatever (which has been said then and when of other position sets iirc), it will on the other hand for sure favour such programs which have better understanding of the basic opening principles - which may not matter much in "normal" games, when the library leads the programs right into the middlegame. Anyway, here are the positions: rqbbknnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RQBBKNNR w KQkq - 0 1 rqbnkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RQBNKBNR w KQkq - 0 1 rqnbknbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RQNBKNBR w KQkq - 0 1 rqnnkbbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RQNNKBBR w KQkq - 0 1 rbqnknbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RBQNKNBR w KQkq - 0 1 rnqbknbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNQBKNBR w KQkq - 0 1 rnqnkbbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNQNKBBR w KQkq - 0 1 rbbqknnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RBBQKNNR w KQkq - 0 1 rbnqknbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RBNQKNBR w KQkq - 0 1 rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1 rnnqkbbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNNQKBBR w KQkq - 0 1 rbbnkqnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RBBNKQNR w KQkq - 0 1 rbnnkqbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RBNNKQBR w KQkq - 0 1 rnbbkqnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBBKQNR w KQkq - 0 1 rnnbkqbr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNNBKQBR w KQkq - 0 1 rbbnknqr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RBBNKNQR w KQkq - 0 1 rnbbknqr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBBKNQR w KQkq - 0 1 rnbnkbqr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBNKBQR w KQkq - 0 1 (diagrams not really necessary this time) Regards, M.Scheidl
