Fortunately, it's not only for programmers, otherwise they would soon run out of topics to discuss. They may have a lot of ideas in principle, but mostly they just "borrow" code from each other ;o). Chess software problems and their solution is a fine topic to discuss. My main interest in computer chess isn't really chess itself, but the enjoyment of fiddling with a program, either to make it function properly (or at all) or make it play a stronger game of chess by tweaking various available options. WinBoard is the cause of that interest.
