The experiment was performed even before. In "More Chess and Computers" by David Levy and Monroe Newborn we are told that Richard Greenblat of the MIT wrote a program called CHEOPS that improved a previous one -1957 vintage- MACHAK VI. Cheops was designed in this way: whenever Machak reached a position considered strategically satisfactory, Cheops would take a look at the further tactical posibilities. Levy played a game in 1978 against this machak-cheops machine and won at 44 move. The poitn is, howeweer, what Chris has said: how to coordinate these engines in order to prefer a tactical or non tactical evaluation. This decision presuposes another engine or criteria, but then what you need is to develop that engine that knows how to wight tactical and strategical nuances.
