Chess programs are cheaper and stronger than chess computers.
Best freeware programs are Rebel Decade (DOS with clean interface and strong
engine), Winboard ( Windows and can be used to play on internet chess servers as
well), Xboard (same as Winboard but for Unix), Crafty ( Windows and Unix, strong
engine) and MacChess or Sigma Lite for Macintosh.
Professional chess programs are Hiarcs (Mac, DOS, Windows), Rebel (DOS),
M-chess (DOS but no new version came out in the last 2 years), Shredder(Windows
and the current world champion), Fritz (Known throughout the world), Nimzo,
Junior, and Genius. All of these programs are very strong, are pretty close to
each other in strength except for one or two and differ only in their features.
If you mean chess playing computer then I would recommend a portable. They
have the same engine with table-top models, are cheaper and you can play with
them anywhere. There is Novag Sapphire II for 200 USD and around 2100 ELO ( a
new version will come out in October for around 300 USD), Kasparov Cosmos for
100 USD and 2000 ELO and Mephisto Miami for 50 USD and 1900 ELO.
The weakest of the above mentioned programs is stronger than strongest
portable for sure assuming that you have at least a Pentium. I would recommend
that you try out with one of the freeware programs first. You can weaken any
program by adjusting the engine or the time control anyway. You can find more
information on these programs at this great forum.
