This is quite likely the problem.  A good while back someone took the
book.bin file for crafty directly from a CDRom and tried to use it.  It
was flagged as read-only and the open would fail, rather than opening as
read-only when I asked for "+".  Same problem happened when several have
tried to create a CD with the book, and use the book from the CD, which
fails because I open for writing for the learning stuff...

Some versions of libraries and/or DOS/windows seem to let the open
proceed,
and will bomb on a write, while others make the open fail completely
which
produces a different problem...
