Subject: What Ply is deep junior seeing minimum

I've read through a bunch of messages on the bulletion board but did not
see this posted anywhere. What minimum depth is deep junior getting before
qsearch and extensions. Minimum depth would probably be an early middle game
depth. I"ve heard Deep blue got depth 17 minimum is this true. If so i'm
thinking Deep Junior must be getting depth 14 minimum. Also how much of a
hardware increase would be necceary to get deep junior to get 5 more depth. And
could this be accomplished in the next 5 to 10 years on conventional equipment.
I"m guessing that the best branching factor for a computer is maybe 4 with null
move but this is probably optimistic. So I would guess deep junior has a
branching factor of 5 or 6 meaning it would take 5^5 increase in speed to get
another 5 ply. Do you think this is the case? Is deep junior limited by
conventional branching factors or does it have a super low branching factor.
Also does the increase in rating fall off with each new depth achieved. It
would seem that there are diminishing returns. Perhaps with 5 more ply a gm like
Kramnik would still be able to find winning games beyond its horizon. This would
point to the need to improve the evaluation algorithms if they ever want to make
a super chess program that runs on conventional equipment that is capable of
being over 2800 fide. Interested to hear what you people think.
