This is just a personal opinion, of course, but as a user who purchases a number of packages, and a programmer who has written a lot of code in the past, I happen to like the trend toward putting programs in as engines in Fritz. As a user, it gives me a known interface that I like and am certain will work. As a programmer, it allows concentration on the interesting part of the work - the chess engine, instead of spending a lot of time developing a user interface. I suspect a huge percentage of programmer time is spent on the user interface that the programmers would rather spend working on the engine.
