I want to reassure myself I understood your argument correctly .

Crafty is assuming it is pondering so also uses some time it assumes to save
with pondering .

When realizing bad position ( made clear by strong tactical opponent ) crafty
will use more time and when it hasn't saved it in advance ( with pondering )
will come into time trouble near time control and therefor maybe play a weak
move around this area .

This is why this will be only detected when crafty plays against very strong
opponents ( as else no additional time is needed ) .

Is this correct ??

If yes , it would really require another test against the top of the pops with
and without ponder .
