The documentation is simply trying to say that your program communicates with
WinBoard by reading from standard input and writing to standard output.  It
doesn't need to make windows of its own or have a Windows message processing
loop.  However, if you *want* your program to have its own windows and/or a
message processing loop, that's fine, as long as it communicates with WinBoard
through standard input and standard output.
