Crafty will run with sufficient increase in speed on the Alpha over the PII-300 to make it worthwhile for you with all that you do with Crafty. But Crafty is the only chess program that I have that would run >2X faster, and so I will wait. Chess programs are the only reason I would "need" a faster machine, and so I should get the one that speeds up most of them the best. kp
