I agree. Within the last year I had participated here
in few threads discussing the best (in some way) chess
programmers and other contributors. It was purely
accidental that this one caught on fire as it did.
The two main "combatants" could have argued the same
issues in almost any other thread.

More worrisome (for the future of the CCC) than the sharp
exchange is the censorious hypersensitivity some folks
have exhibited right afterwards. It mirrors the pathological
obsession with the self-esteem being promoted in "modern"
education. Here in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts the
sensitive do-gooders have convinced some school soccer
legaues to abandon scoring the games (goal counting), to
avoid psychological injury to the child's self-esteem. Now
everybody wins. Allegedly. I suppose, the next step from
the hypersensitive self-esteem protectors here will be to
demand abandoning tournament score keeping for amateur
programs to protect the self-esteem of the programmers. Then
the love, harmony and happiness will reign on the CCC.

Give me a break. This is not a Girl Scout club. Bob can
take it, I am sure (and he probably loves it, anyway).
