So much of advertising is made up by people who just want to make something sound good, but really have no idea how it works. I think this is the case with IBM's Deep Blue page(s). The advertising people heard some (probably short and simple) descriptions of how Deep Blue works, and then they tried to disseminate this information to the untechnical (i.e. fairly ignorant about computer-chess) masses of people who would be reading the pages. To the average person, the descriptions on IBM's pages and the technical details he might read here would probably have about the same meaning, because he doesn't know any different. You seem to forget that we (the computer-chess community) are a very small portion of the total population, and we impart upon IBM approximately 0% of their total profit. Therefore, IBM doesn't really care that we will know the difference - they only care about the masses, who don't know any better about this issue and are also the ones who generate IBM's profit.
