During the year, they have all their expenses paid, and work out in huge
multi-million training complexes paid for with taxpayer money.  They receive,
besides the basic necessities, regular money and a free vehicle.

Amateur in the same sense that Cuba's Stevensen was an amateur.

Similarly for people in the Armed forces that compete in the Olympics.  Their
entire "job" is to train for the Olympics.

There is no such thing as an "amateur" athlete in the Olympics -- at least not
from the United States.
