Subject: Pawn "Endgame" Position

Author: Larrry Smith

I was interested in what would happen -- with perfect play -- if I gave both
sides in a chess game just the kings and the pawns in initial position, with no
pieces, and White to move. I don't know if this "endgame" has been solved yet,
but when I pit Chessmaster 6000 against itself at 5 and 10 minutes I keep
getting the same results, move for move. I wonder if it is possible for Black to
win or draw here -- it seems logical that is is, but Chessmaster hasn't deviated
even one ply after 10 games. What would happen if two grand-masters sat down to
this position?
