This is a followup to an earlier post regarding the strength of the new Karpov Grandmaster at different level settings. I'm convinced this one will be a real classic and represents a new order of price/performance value, so info on its playing strength may be of value to those intending to use it for heavy-duty tournament training. After 8 games against Power Chess (which has an 'adaptive' opponent and rates your play), it came in at 1016, with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses. This was at its lowest level (level 6, "1-ply"). This is as weak as it gets- which may not be significant to most tournament players, but does tell you that it would be a frustrating opponent for most kids learning the game, or adult novices. My own experience coaching chess was that most grade school kids range from 400-900. I originally intended to play a 12-game match, but it was apparent after half a dozen games that Power Chess was zeroing in on a rating pretty easily. I'm working on another series (6 games) at level 41 (average 5 seconds per move) and will report back when it is completed; I expect this to wind up somewhere in the 1600-1900 range.
