If you search a minimum of 16 plies, a maximum of 45 plies, what is the 'typical case'??? That is all it is saying... that along the important branches it is probing 30 plies deep. Shoot, in my 12 ply searches I probe 48 plies deep, and have even hit 64 and blown arrays before. That is not amazing. Comparing it to chessmaster and 11-12 plies is not quite right of course... as that program _also_ extends the searches a lot...
