Go up one level in this thread

How is this to be interpreted? IE I don't like the chessmaster questions/
threads. So I don't read them. Would I delete them or inject moderator
suggestions that they be stopped? No.

So if you mean "personally, how do you rate your tolerance for off-topic
posts and do you read them?" I would call myself a 6. If you mean "would
you delete posts...?" then I would call myself a 3. I can live with stuff
I don't read.

Immediate warning, with a watchful eye to see if he needs to be kicked
out. (IE is he an alter-ego for someone else and only here to make trouble?)

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. So long as the thread discusses why
the person was removed, rather than "you moron, he should never have been
kicked out..."

Harder to answer.

1. obvious garbage: 1 moderator to delete it immediately. The other two
could overrule him and restore it if they see fit.

2. borderline: 2 moderators ought to agree, so 2 out of three.

3. special case: a moderator involved in a discussion ought to not delete
anything in that discussion, period. It should be referred to another moderator
for action, since impartiality is necessary.

Two. Three is probably asking too much. But all three ought to enter into
the discussion before the decision is made, as the hold-out might change his
mind.

Delete the post if it is offensive, send an email warning, and then get
on with life.

Nothing.

I wouldn't mind either a post pointing out that such announcements don't
belong here, or a private email pointing out the same thing off-line, so
that a long discussion doesn't flare up.

I grew up in the management approach called "praise in public, chastise in
private." It works..

I would assume that I have another moderator's approval already. IE I wouldn't
think it reasonable to unilaterally make such a decision. Which would mean that
the member could start a thread about the disagreement, but the current thread
would be stopped manually (by deletions if necessary) assuming that the thread
contains objectionable material. If it has drifted way off topic, I simply
don't care much about that. If members are enjoying the discussion, then isn't
that the reason we are all here? Don't expect me to join in, but also don't
expect me to police such threads either unless someone complains and has a
valid point.

I wouldn't like it. And I would probably use private email to explain copy-
right laws to him. And if he continued, I would recommend to the other
moderators that we suspend him.
