I think Pete gave some good advice.  I'm one who is always concerned about the
"best" when in most cases the best (at least as far a chess engines goes) is
well beyond me.

The discussion about the best could go on ad infinitum.  And the discussions
will shift with each new version of the program.  So I've come to the following
conclusion.  Choose an engine (or family of engines) for the qualities you want
to improve in yourself e.g., tactics vs positional, etc.  Works for me....
