On the other hand, if they would participate and not win, it would be more or less the same as it will be: Another company can put the "World Champion" badge on their boxes. Maybe, some will NOT buy Chessmaster because it doesn't participate? It's not a sign of self-confidence after all. The safe part of their market isn't influenced much by computer tournament results IMO. But in fact I think, they just want to save the money and time needed for a participation. Furthermore, it even supports the credibility of a chess software company, when they don't claim the program to be the very best of them all. So they may think, what is a WCh title for?
