I have an idea for creation of an openings database. It would require a large amount of cooperation to be successful. Consider an effort, where powerful programs such as Crafty, Junior, Ferret, Virtual Chess 2, etc. were pitted against each other under the following conditions: 1. 24 hours is allowed per each move 2. No opening book is to be used at all 3. Each possible opening move [each white pawn up 1 or 2 and each of the 4 knight possibilities] is to be tried. In this way, only the first move for white is predetermined. To make this work would require a chess server so that lots of machines could participate, via the internet. You would need a clear estimation of the machines' power to rank the results of the study also. Does this idea have merit? Do you think it possible that new and exciting opening sequences might be generated? I realize that a single game could take months to complete. But if we had the programs running in the background, the machine is not lost for all useful purposes.
