Except for opening and endgame databases, most chess programs will fit happily on a floppy disc. The biggest opening databases at the moment are about CD sized. The number of strong games that have been played seem to be about that size or a bit smaller. If a lot more space was available, i guess someone would figure out how to use it but right now i don't know how. Endgame tablebases are the obvious place you could use a DVD. You could fit all the 5 piece tables and a small part of the 6 piece tables.
