This will be a very brief message since I'm not at home. Rd 1 Shredder 1-0 Diep Insomniac 0 - 1 Fritz Junior 1/2 SOS Francesca 0 - 1 Rebel Nimzo 1 - 0 Zchess Pacque Expert 0 - 1 Chess Tiger Crafty 1 - 0 Xinix It was nice to meet many of the people I have only known through the internet. Stefan Mayer-Kahlen was interviewed by a reporter from CNN. SOS seemed a bit unlucky against Junior. Junior found its way to a draw using tablebases, which SOS wasn't using. Maybe someone will analyse here and see whether there was a win to be had. Crafty won when Xinix made an illegal move (tried to castle when in check, I think). Vincent was blaming himself for not doing more work on the endgame, because Shredder outplayed Diep in an opp- coloured bishops endgame. Many of the amateurs (Tom King, James Robertson etc) commented on how tough the professionals are and how wide the gap seems when playing against them. Amir Ban was non-commital when I asked how it was going "could be worse, but could be better". The tournament hall is HUGE (maybe the size of four or six tennis courts) and there are many events going on there, including the MSO Masters chess tournament. There was a huge crowd gathered around one game featuring David Howells who is an extremely strong 10-year old. By contrast, I was one of very few spectators at the computer chess, though many people wandered along to see what was going on. In the second round, the pairings were as follows: CT vs Shredder Fritz vs Nimzo Rebel vs Crafty (crafty had a problem here, as it was out of book after the first move in a Sicilian. The operator said he had built the book from some games sent by Bob, but it didn't seem to be working). When I left, Rebel's score was +2.something Diep vs Junior SOS vs Insomniac Xinix vs Francesca Zchess vs Pacque Expert (Zchess seemed to be winning this quite easily when I left, with a score of +8.something). The five games I haven't commented on were pretty even when I left. Cheers Andrew
