One thing is that this event is just one small part of a larger event, namely the Mindsports Olympiad. The Computer Chess, and Computer Go, Computer Amazons and Computer Awari (and some other games too I think) tournaments are off in one corner of a very large hall, which seems to be laid out for a lot of other tournaments for human players. I think it's a little unfair to be critical of the organizers who are on-site (Jos Uiterwijk, Jaap van den Herik [I think - I just got a glimpse of his badge] and Don Beal) because they are all working very hard and enthusiastically. Jos in particular has been exceptionally friendly to this "casual" visitor at least. There is a press room, and I talked to them and it seemed they might be flexible about internet access from there (James Robertson sent his report to Frank Quisinsky via that room, I think). However, there isn't a huge bank of computers you can just go and sit down at; the computers in the press room seemed to belong to the people who brought them. As for the lack of competitors, you could fairly aim criticism at me, because I live only 200 miles from London and could easily have participated, if I didn't have a family commitment this week. As it is, I'm kicking myself because on the two occasions I was there, it seemed like good fun was being had by all. Andrew
