support is much harder than you think.

1.  Travel from outside the US to anyplace in the US is non-trivial.  Figure
$1,000 per ticket if you are lucky, average.  Since at least 2/3 of the
programs are from outside the US, and assuming 30 programs, figure $20,000
for travel, for starters.  Not cheap.

2.  The ICCA has always required income from these events.  To the tune of
(last time I asked) about $30,000.

3.  The general public considers chess "solved".  So asking someone to cough
up $50K for support is going to be met with "what for, didn't IBM already solve
chess?"

Hosting such an event is easy to set up.  Getting money is something else.
Providing hardware for everyone is also problematic, but solvable.  Add all
that up, and it is a challenge...
