I don't think white's position is particularly horrible here.  Either Qd3 or
Qf3 defends against the bishop's threat on f2.  It doesn't look instantly lost
at all, and to my eye looks reasonably equal overall.

This probably is lost, I agree.  I don't believe black can play 20 Bxe5 and
survive.  And castling drops a pawn.  So it looks ugly to my (human) eye.
