The problem I think is 9 rounds is overkill in a swiss when there are only 14 participants. If they had played only 5 rounds, the top programs would probably have never been paired with the bottom 2 finishers and the pairing problems you have alluded to would never have occurred. If you look at the pairings actually made, none of the top 6 were paired with the bottom 2 until the 7th round. If 5 rounds sounds too random, then just have them play 2 games with each other. One as Black and one as White. This would also alleviate colour allocation problems and now they would play a total of 10 games so the tournament result would not be made more random. I don't like the idea of cutting out the weaker programs. I prefer a policy that is encouraging and not exclusionary. >> >>On August 25, 2000 at 20:33:58, walter irvin wrote: >> >>>On August 25, 2000 at 19:43:49, Peter McKenzie wrote: >>> >>>> >>>>No. Name 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 1 2 3 4 Score SOP >>>>---------------------------------------------------------- >>>> 1 Shredder x = 1 = = 1 = 1 1 1 7.0 48.0 >>>> 2 Fritz = x = = = = 1 1 1 1 6.5 48.0 >>>> 3 Chess Tiger 0 = x = = 1 1 = 1 1 6.0 37.5 >>>> 4 Rebel = = x 0 0 1 1 1 1 1 6.0 37.5 >>>> 5 Junior = = = 1 x = 0 = 1 1 5.5 44.5 >>>> 6 SOS 0 = 1 = x 0 = 1 1 1 5.5 39.5 >>>> 7 Nimzo = 0 = 0 1 1 x 0 1 1 5.0 49.5 >>>> 8 Insomniac 0 0 0 = 1 x = 1 1 1 5.0 42.0 >>>> 9 ZChess 0 0 = 0 x 1 0 1 1 1 4.5 36.0 >>>> 10 Diep 0 0 0 = 0 x 1 = 1 1 4.0 36.0 >>>> 11 Crafty 0 0 0 0 1 0 x = 1 1 3.5 35.5 >>>> 12 Francesca = 0 0 0 0 = = x 1 1 3.5 35.5 >>>> 13 XiniX 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 x 1 1.0 38.0 >>>> 14 Pacque Expert 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 x 0.0 39.5 >>>> >>>> >>>>No. Name 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Score SOP >>>>--------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>> 1 Shredder W10+ B3+ W2= B4= W5= B7= W6+ B8+ W9+ 7.0 48.0 >>>> 2 Fritz B8+ W7+ B1= W5= B4= W3= B9+ W6= B11+ 6.5 48.0 >>>> 3 Chess Tiger B14+ W1- B12= W8+ B7= B2= W10+ B13+ W5= 6.0 37.5 >>>> 4 Rebel B12+ W11+ B5- W1= W2= B6- B13+ W7+ W14+ 6.0 37.5 >>>> 5 Junior W6= B10+ W4+ B2= B1= W9= W7- B14+ B3= 5.5 44.5 >>>> 6 SOS B5= W8= B7- W12+ B14+ W4+ B1- B2= W13+ 5.5 39.5 >>>> 7 Nimzo W9+ B2- W6+ B11+ W3= W1= B5+ B4- W8- 5.0 49.5 >>>> 8 Insomniac W2- B6= W13+ B3- W10= B11+ W12+ W1- B7+ 5.0 42.0 >>>> 9 ZChess B7- W14+ B11- B10+ W13+ B5= W2- W12+ B1- 4.5 36.0 >>>> 10 Diep B1- W5- B14+ W9- B8= W13+ B3- W11+ B12= 4.0 36.0 >>>> 11 Crafty W13+ B4- W9+ W7- B12= W8- B14+ B10- W2- 3.5 35.5 >>>> 12 Francesca W4- B13+ W3= B6- W11= W14+ B8- B9- W10= 3.5 35.5 >>>> 13 XiniX B11- W12- B8- W14+ B9- B10- W4- W3- B6- 1.0 38.0 >>>> 14 Pacque Expert W3- B9- W10- B13- W6- B12- W11- W5- B4- 0.0 39.5 >>>> >>>> >>>>No. Name Win Draw Loss Unf.
