I think we have to accept that modern operating systems are going to suck more resources from the computer. It's probably the case that a pure DOS program can squeeze the most from a single application written with only performance in mind like chess programs do. But probably you do not have to give up too much to run on Unix, Os2 Windows or whatever and get a lot of advantages in return. I am no lover of Windows and use Linux and other Unix platforms. I do not know if Unix is more efficient than Windows or not but I suspect it is. However Unix is for power users and is probably not very well suited to the average hobbiest or computer owner. Maybe this will change in the future (I hope it does) but as much as I hate it, Windows seems to be the defacto standard and a commerical chess program is unlikely to do well without a good port to it.
