Well, I'm a technical kind of guy and in a previous job where I was a
phone tech supporting end users it became clear why Windows is so
successful. Most users I talked to on the phone wouldn't even NEED a
keyboard if not for their word processor. We're talking total control of
a PC with ONE button (not like any of them know what the "other" mouse
button is for). Like it or hate it, Windows severely reduced the
learning curve for most PC users. I'm an old DOS and UNIX guy myself
(well, not old at 26, but have been using computers since I was 11), got
into PC's with DOS 3.3 and spent my first 5 years on the Internet in
textful bliss with a UNIX shell account :) Windows is not shit, it's
just us elitest bastards who can't stand that we spent so much time
learning the ins and outs of DOS and/or UNIX and now complete idiots can
have just as much computing power without opening a manual. Windows 95
may no be perfect, but unlike Win3.1 at least you can work on it and fix
things when something goes wrong. Win3.1 was more of a reinstall if you
have any problems kind of operating environment. Win95 is not a clean
break from DOS, and any consumer level Windows for the forseeable future
won't break with DOS either, too many of us still want to run our DOS
programs and Microsoft has to address that if they want people to
upgrade. I don't like a lot of Microsoft's strong arm tactics to
dominate the OS market, but like it or not they are the best game in
town right now when you combine usability, support, and available apps.
I also run Linux on my machine at home, but that is not an OS for the
faint of heart. Anyway, my spare change...
