>The idea is good, but you have to watch and control the number of rounds vs >the outside demonstrations. Nobody wants a 2-3 week event. Even if it has >all sorts of entertaining things going on like the above GM challenge. I have been speaking to several people, and many like the idea of shorter time controls, something to the effect of all moves in a game in either 45 to 60 mins. And also have the event starting on a Friday, and ending on the Sunday. Being a 4 day event, it would be possible to have 3 rounds daily, and get 12 good rounds in. Plus a GM match or two, would give any spectators a good 5 to 6 hours for their money. >I can't say anything about pricing, not knowing anything about Canada. But I >can assure you that the fastest internet sits right here in the USA. It is >called "internet2" and has set huge speed records for data thruput... I use >it all the time and download 100mbyte files in seconds... I was talking about bandwidth/dollar. It is the cheapest, and as by fastest, I mean that as the popluation is lower per capita, internet traffic is lower, thus faster speeds. >12 days is simply too long. You will be asking someone from outside North >America to be away at _least_ two whole weeks. That is a long time, and >not inexpensive. I think a week is the most you can expect this thing to >last... And even a week is a long time. Addressed above. >That isn't bad at all, but in general, the hotel isn't the most important >cost. Air travel can be huge from overseas. And the time off from work for >those with full-time jobs can be even more valuable to them, as it might >represent a major piece of their annual vacation time. Yes I realize this, and I am trying to get cost relief for the authors. With cheap hotel and cost relief on flight fees, I think it will attract quite a few authors and programs. >I have put together such things in the past. It takes time, but not an >overwhelming amount of time. But the problem will probably be in trying >to convince anyone that this is worthwhile after the "deep blue show". Of the two sponsors that I have spoken to, they think it is a great idea, as the same year, the World Track and Field Championships are held here in Edmonton. This helps us, as any "World" event is sure to attract attention. >This is my third WMCCC. All three were _horrible_. In Jakarta, we heard >absolutely nothing. In Paris, we would have gotten nothing if not for Thorsten >and his mobile phone. I'd think that the DGT people (or something similar) >would provide their hardware to make live games automatic (if they don't screw >up too much). I am hoping to get a reliable way to showing live games, whether it be over a board, or as one of the sponsors I am trying to get is a very large ISP, that there is the possibility of web cams, which is a very entertaining thought!
