I found this textfragment in www.deja.com: In chess I started to ask programmers for "next best move" buttons and "k-Best-modes" in 1986, and it took several years until these ideas crept in the commercial programs. (The first program with k-best mode was Doctor (by Kraas and Schruefer) late in 1993.) And an interesting link with more info about doctor http://207.158.205.122/Products/engines/doctor/index.htm
