Yes. I don't believe that everyone really wants it but most will
get it out of fear of not being part of the club. Whatever it is or
isn't is a completely separate issue from it's popularity and widespread
use.

This reminds me a lot of the way IBM was with PC's years ago. So many
people would by an IBM brand PC despite the fact that you could get a
faster better machine for LESS money. And they often knew this too.
But
something emotional and irrational would take over and they would make
what they thought to be the "safe" choice.

Now I don't think window's is a bad choice for people to make. When
people ask me what to buy (new users) I always say they should get a
pentium based windows machine. This is so safe no one is ever going
to come back to me and say I gave them stupid advice. But I have
never ever told them that windows (or Pentiums) were the best. I always
say something like there are more powerful OS's and more powerful
hardware
but this is by far your most practical choice.

The most compelling argument for Windows is the software choices. I
would like to point out that this same point kept people chained to
DOS.

I think we should all be thankful to microsoft for caring enough
about us to make sure DOS stayed the same for over a decade. Those
guy's are real innovators.
