My first unit was a Fidelity Par Excellence. It was a nice value at the time
and enjoyed playing it. I still keep it but do not play with it anymore. My
second was Fidelity TravelMaster, a little unit that I really loved. Whole
TravelMasters were faulty IIRC, so I had to return it back. My third unit was
Novag Sapphire II which I still love. As you can see I prefer portables over
stand-alone units since I can play with them anywhere. I do not care for the
feeling of playing on board. I set up my board and play on my PC or play with
Sapphire when I am not at home. I look forward to Star Sapphire but its
estimated price of 350 USD is really making me think twice.

A lot stronger would be better. The strongest stand-alone unit ever built is
Tasc R30 which is around 2300-2400 SSDF, where as top programs on K6-450 are
around 2550-2600 on the same list.
