I own the Fidelity Mach III, and I like it a lot. It's not nearly as strong as
today's top software programs, but for playing, rather than analysis, that's a
plus. The Mach III is stronger than I am, but not so much stronger that I can't
beat it now and then. I recognize that the creators of today's top software try
to provide "weakening" options for their programs, but -- at least in the case
of ChessBase -- I don't think they do a very good job. I wonder how much of a
market there would be for (1) older, weaker versions of today's software or (2)
the programs in the stand-alone units, transferred to a CD-ROM. For purposes of
analysis, one naturally wants the strongest engine available, but surely there
are customers, like myself, who would prefer to PLAY against the older programs,
operating at full strength, rather than artificially weakened versions of
today's best programs.
