Yes, exactly, that matches my vague memories!  Thanks for the details.

And I have done it that way with netscape some month ago, and it worked,
if I remember right.  I didn't like it for other reasons, and stopped
to use it.

I also believe this (the extension of the URL) is just what the browsers
do to communicate that data to the web server, but I'm not sure about it.
If that is correct, most (if not all) browsers should support such
extended URLs (by just transferring it).
