My advice is to get the update ( called "Power version" there )to 2.03 from http://www.oxford-softworks.com/chsupg.html , to use the big book from the CD and while installing , install the 3 and 4-men tablebases from the CD too ( as CSTal only can use them in a now uncommon uncompressed format) . Hashtables are set automatically to a sensible value . There are a few programs Tal scores extremely bad against ( like Shredder ). But against others ( like for example Crafty ) it scores very well . In general Tal seems to do better at longer time control but it isn't as bad in blitz as you might expect . Overall in SSDF-rating I think it is probably something like 150-200 points missing to the absolute top . That isn't exactly what I'd call very weak .
