When in trouble, Tinker will include 1/3rd of any time advantage it has (in addition to the extra time normally allocated). Generally, Tinker's time management tries not to use a little more or less time each move, but to use larger blocks of extra time when needed, assuming it takes 3-6x as long to search at least a full ply deeper.
