Here is some statistics from scanning Mr. Hyatt's large opening book:

The file large.pgn contains 74493629 bytes in 2000542 lines.

It contains 116899 games with a total of 8966823 moves giving an average
of 76.7 halfmoves pr. game or 38.35 full moves.

During the games 9083722 positons were encountered, giving the
possibility
of making a total of 285632451 legal moves, which gives an average
of 31.4 possible legal moves in a position.

The maximum number of moves found in a game was 360,
and the maximum number of possible legal moves in a position was 73.
