I thought himem.sys cannot be surpressed by config.sys in W98. Did you check the
memory with the command

mem /c|more

to see which drivers are loaded. I wouldn't wonder if himem.sys was still
there... or do you boot the "previous operating system" (or how it's called in
english)? On the other hand, if himen.sys was in memory, Fritz3 would not be
able to run in x-mode (for 16 MB hash). If it has trouble loading the book, this
is a memory problem too.

When I run F3, I use the SHIFT-F5 method and have the following batch file for
the rest (a bit complicated, as I can choose to start it either with or without
TascBoard support):

@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
SET LMOUSE=C:\MOUSE
SET DIRCMD=/P /O:EN
LH C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE
cls
c:
cd \schach\fritz3
echo.
echo Bitte auswählen:
echo ----------------
echo F Fritz3 OHNE SmartBoard
echo T Fritz3 MIT SmartBoard
echo.
choice /C:FT /T:T,5
if errorlevel 2 LH tascdrv /x
if errorlevel 1 LH fritz3 /x

You see that the batch does nothing special, except that little menu. But this
is important, because with the SmartBoard driver, I cannot have x-mode + book
due to the memory restrictions. I have to configure with EMM386 in this case,
and LH (=loadhigh) comes into effect ...probably.

DOS users... lost souls in a world of oblivion.
