In the case of Crafty, once the total pieces on the board gets to 16 or less, I start seeing tablebase "hits". As a deep search can trade all the way down to a 5-piece ending without really trying hard at all. If you wait until you only have 5 pieces on the board before you enable them, it is _too_ late. You are already won, lost or drawn, without being able to make the decision to enter such an ending...
