You need to develop a thick skin in this sport. More than any other sport I
know, people get up-tight about small things in computer chess.

At the WMCCC in London, when Crafty started to play the same opening against
Fritz as it had done previously against Nimzo (which it later, thankfully,
varied), Vincent, Marcus and Mathius all started shouting at me! Other
spectators were quite astonished - one said we seemed to take our game very
seriously (people playing other games (including non-computer chess) at the
event all seemed happy and serene by comparison). He also advised me to get some
valium for next year's competition!

Although this was the last round, and so people were more uptight than usual, it
is certainly true that chess programmers are not the world's most sensitive
people!

My advice would be to find one of Vincent's posts and reply in a ruthless manner
- tearing every point he makes to shreds. It will make you feel much better,
restore your self esteem, and make you one of the most popular posters in CCC -
all in one go! :)

Remember also that depression can be alleviated by medicines - e.g. prozac, or
St John's wort (which can be bought without prescription from health stores).

Finally, it is important for depressed people to stay active. It might help if
you ensure that you walk a couple of miles a day. And as you go, count the
chimneys on the buildings - this forces you to look upwards, and even changing
your posture helps to relieve depression (depressed people tend to look down as
they walk).

Hope this helps.
