Why be disappointed about that? There's a lot more interesting things to do than be a betatester IMHO. But you're right, some are not as good as they think they are. I probably stink at it, but who knows, I haven't tried it that many times myself. I contemplated applying for a chance at Schröder, but I couldn't think of any qualifications I posess, so why bother. Besides, the choice is pretty easy if it's between helping a programmer I know personally and a software company. Though the latter may make you feel more important. But it's just an illusion.
