The two people I have corresponded with who purchased Hiarcs 6.0 Mac
seemed very happy with it.

Something is badly wrong if the PPC version isn't faster on your
machine.

Try this experiment:
- Set "Level" to Infinite.
- Under "Options", set "Max Depth" to 8
- Under "Options", set "Book=Off"
- move 1. d4 on the board, and see how long HIARCS takes to reply.
On my 7300/180,
- HIARCS 1.0 Mac took 31 seconds, even using Speed Doubler 2.
- HIARCS 6.0 Mac took 6 seconds.

You are checking the book learning feature?
They have been coy about how that works, and I haven't done tne
experiments myself. It is possible that it doesn't update it's
book from games against itself, only when another player beats it.
In any event, you can try comparing the current opening book file
against that stored on the CD when you think that HIARCS should have
learned something.

Have you tried:
hiarcs.mac@dial.pipex.com

I have both the old and new products, and I've spent a good amount of
time with each. I've run problem tests, speed tests, and comparisons
with HIARCS 6.0 Mac.
Everything I've done indicates that HIARCS 6.0 is a much faster,
stronger
product that HIARCS 1.0.
