On ICC there are several programs that are automatic, and Ferret is one
of those. I log it onto the net and leave. It sees challenges come in
and accepts them, and plays chess while I am off changing diapers, etc.
It will go until the net connection drops, which in my case is usually a
couple of hours.

I check on it occasionally, and if it is dead lost or dead drawn I might
resign or offer a draw.

Other programs that are automatic are Crafty (dozens of Crafty accounts,
if not hundreds), Zarkov, KnightCap, Now, Shredder, WChess, Stobor, the
occasional Gnuchess, and perhaps a few others, plus more that I might
not know about, on Fics or Chess.Net.

Most of these use Winboard or XBoard, which is pretty convenient.

The other computer accounts (and there aren't that many of them, most
computer accounts are Crafty), are manual. They log on using a "human"
interface, and run a chess program in another window or on another
machine. The motives, experience, and competence of these people can
vary a lot, so I would be hesitant to draw conclusions about specific
programs that are manually operated.

Yes.

>Does Rebel 9 have this time control?

If it doesn't, the operator probably uses a fixed time per move,
possibly changing it as he either accumulates or runs low on time.
