Yes, and something similar is currently being implemented on FICS. It
doesn't exactly use bitboards but pseudo moves, which is even more
compact but requires more work at the client side as well.

Bitboards have the drawback that you always need a bunch of them to
express a complex move (like a pawn capture with a promotion at the same
time) whereas in the pseudo move comcept almost anything can be
expressed in 4 bytes only (exception: doing/undoing multiple moves at
once in examine mode).

Generally we'll be able to do 99% of all board updates in less than 20
bytes, as opposed to the 150-180 used currently, which will help
somewhat to speed things up.
