This means that you would need to use the emulator/translator to get this stuff to run. It has been my experience (limited experience) that a 500 mhz Alpha is perhaps 70% the speed of a Pentium Pro 200 when running compute-intensive x86 code. In order to get higher performance, you would need to use versions that are compiled for Alpha. This system would be perhaps 40% faster than a P2/300 if you got these versions. And there are no commercial chess programs that I know of that are compiled for Alpha right now -- these versions don't exist. With some emailing and polite asking (or an expenditure for a compiler plus a little hacking), you can probably get Crafty running native for Alpha. But if you are buying this so that Genius or Hiarcs or something like that will go fast, you are making a mistake. If you are buying the machine in order to heat a room in your house, you will be very satisfied. Also check out the enorex and polywell sites: http://www.enorex.com http://www.polywell.com When that article about with the "fastest way to run NT" came out, the machine you are talking about was the only one using the 2 mb of cache, I think. Now these others might be the same speed or faster, I don't know. bruce
