I think they may appearing before the end of this year. A few people have

It also has an extremely long pipeline, and only 8KB of first level data cache.
Those are bad for most chess programs. Expect similar performance to an Athlon
or PIII running at 75% of the same clock speed, for most (but not all) chess
programs.

The good thing to wait for is probably "Sledgehammer", the 64 bit AMD chip.
Crafty likes 64 bit chips, and i'm sure other programs will learn to like them
if they become successful in home machines. In many ways the Compaq Alpha is
even nicer, but there are still no signs of fast Alphas cheap enough to buy for
a home machine.
