I should also mention that I am a beta tester for numerous programs.
This does not affect my review of the final product. If I say that a
program is the Program of the Year, that certainly affects the other
programs. Those other programmers must certainly be affected by this and
wonder why their program is not program of the year. My Gold Medal list
accents each program's strength, but calling Fritz 5 the Program of the
Year recognizes the brilliant way that the Fritz programmers
implemented a chess tree/opening book editor into an opening book that
the Fritz engines can use. This unique concept has implications for
opening book study and learning theory and challenges Bookup as "The"
opening book editor on the market. Other features like the
correspondence/analyzer feature and the sparring mode for players lower
than master level combine to give Fritz 5 the lead in chess software
features. Of course nearly every other program has something special to
it and that is why the Gold Medal list is looked upon by commercial
programmers as their Holy Grail achievement list which keeps them
constantly adding newer and more useful features all the time. It is a
fine line between reviewing a company's product and panning or praising
it, and I appreciate your concerns. I only hope that I never cross that
line just because I receive a company's product for review or beta test.
