My favorite chess database is Chess Assistant, but your tastes may be opposite. Why not get them both? They are under $150 (If I recall correctly). $300 puts both on your desktop. Chess Assistant is a lot faster, and will properly analyze EPD records. ChessBase will run the ChessBase family of engines and calculate ELO values. Bob Pawlak's book has a nice overview on those tools from one year back. Consider that data, along with whatever information in the press releases about the new products to make your decision.
