Just to add on to hyatt's point when you call search you call value=-search(variables here). So if you call search at ply 3 if the score is positive on ply 4 it means that the side to move on ply 4 has a good score. When it gets back to ply 3 its mulitplied by negative 1 effectively because of =-search() and becomes a bad score for you.
