It's probably possible to improve the default Chessmaster by 50 points by changing the settings. However, when you play only Chessmaster personalities against other Chessmaster personalities, you're not going to get a very good indication of what's better. Dr. Hyatt said one time that he had made improvements that would make a Crafty version X+1 beat version X by a large margin, but the playing strength wasn't necessarily much stronger. The only sure way to get a good idea of which personalities are strongest is by playing them against other engines. I understand this is difficult with no autoplayer, and playing them against themselves is a lot of fun, but it's no means by which to decude the strongest.
