I am not denying that certain personalities are stronger than others. It's
probably possible to improve the default Chessmaster by 50 points by changing
the settings. However, when you play only Chessmaster personalities against
other Chessmaster personalities, you're not going to get a very good indication
of what's better. Dr. Hyatt said one time that he had made improvements that
would make a Crafty version X+1 beat version X by a large margin, but the
playing strength wasn't necessarily much stronger. The only sure way to get a
good idea of which personalities are strongest is by playing them against other
engines. I understand this is difficult with no autoplayer, and playing them
against themselves is a lot of fun, but it's no means by which to decude the
strongest.
